After finding my Singer , I thought I was done looking for vintage sewing machines. You ask how to date this machine and how many are made.
As I made mention to in an older post, I got a Singer from a thrift shop seller in an auction. It came complete with a bentwood case but no key and no attachments. This little did though. When I saw the first very badly taken picture I just had to bid even though there were a few machines that had their accessories and their keys.
In the additional pictures the auction site provided I noticed she was vandalized. Notice the two brass nails to the left and right of the number four. My picture is blurry, but to the right, you can see a piece of the delicate Badge metal still stuck on the top left of the nail. Seeing the Singer Badge ripped off the machine broke my heart.
Just for kicks I decided to search for replacement Badges. They then put them up for sale for ridiculous prices and there is no way they can be reattached to sewing machines in the condition that leaves them in. I have nothing against steampunk. I actually think a lot of things people make are beautiful works of art. I Immediately stopped searching for a replacement Badge once I saw how many people were trying to make money by ripping the Singer Badges off machines they came across.
One Etsy Store has a particularly large supply of the semi-mangled Badges.

The Singer 99K sewing machine was introduced in as a response to the growing demand for a lighter more portable domestic sewing machine that did not need to be used in a special table. It used an identical mechanism and many of the same parts other than the basic body casting. The 99K stayed in production until around The Singer 99K was a sturdy and reliable machine that was easy to use.
It became very popular with occasional home users because at 22lbs 10kg , it was more manageable than ‘full size’ machines and it came in a storage case. In the company introduced the option of a Singer electic motor making the 99K the first portable electric machine. The 99K will sew most fabrics from fine delicates to denim or leather and will handle any normal household sewing task with ease. The machines have adjustable tension and stitch length controls. The 99K must always be mounted in some form of base because the underbed mechanism will not allow it to sit directly onto a table surface.
Early Singer 99K’s were sold in wooden bases with a small compartment under the balance wheel to store accessories and bobbins etc. At first they had ‘Bentwood’ polished plywood covers which are now thought of as very desirable.

Raise the needle to its highest position by turning the hand wheel over toward you. Draw the slide plate slightly to the left, then lift its right hand end and draw it toward the needle until it is disengaged from the spring in the bed of the machine.
This assumes that the machine is facing the operator, as if to sew. I like to remove the needle and presser foot at this point, for clearance, and because I try to limit my stab wounds to one a day. Make sure you note which way the flat of the needle sits in the needle clamp. Both of my machines are Needle Flat Right. Next, remove the needle plate. This is done by removing the 2 screws on the top of it and just lifting it out of the way.
An average length screwdriver sits at an awkward angle, and can cause you to strip the head of the screw.

This is a little outside the normal realm of what I post on this blog, but I figured it might make interesting reading. The Backstory. My grandmother was born on the 7th of May, , in Singapore. She was a first-generation Chinese-Singaporean, her parents having migrated to Singapore from southern China. In , she opened her own dressmaking and tailoring shop, in the Malaysian town of Batu Pahat.
When my grandmother opened her shop, she was gifted a beautiful, and brand-new sewing-machine. She used that machine for every single one of the thirty years that she ran her shop, and when my grandfather died in May, , she closed the shop, retired, and immigrated to Australia. She brought the machine with her, and continued to use it almost every single day, up until about She repaired clothes for friends, she took in alterations from her church-group, and she repaired the many rips and tears in clothing that will come from it being worn by two lively grandsons…one of them was me.
I remember when my father purchased her a modern machine, she barely touched it, and went back to using her Singer. She was always a bit set in her ways, and while she was more receptive to other modern technologies at the age of 85, she knew how to use Microsoft Word, type, and print on a computer , she was absolutely dead-set that the only machine she would ever use for sewing was her own.
Around I forget exactly when , my grandmother had to move into a nursing-home. When gran moved to the nursing-home, her sewing-machine was put downstairs in the basement, where it has sat for the past 10 years.

A machine unlike any other in the past years of sewing machine production. On 17 November Singer Manufacturing Company applied for a patent with an invention that relates to sewing machines and it has a primary objective to provide an improved sewing machine which will afford better visibility at the stitching point. The needle-bar and the presser-bar are inclined rearward between eight and sixteen degrees to a vertical plane.
It has been found that if the parts are inclined less than about eight degrees from vertical a clear stitching point is not obtained and the machine elements are located in such a position that they are likely to be contacted by the operator’s head or face when they lean forward. When the parts are inclined greater than 16 degrees, the point of the needle does not always penetrate certain types of materials but tends to be deflected upward, thereby sometimes resulting in the skipping of stitches or in the breaking of needles.

I have this machine too, only the electrical stuff on mine was not in good shape, and it was missing the knee control, so I stripped the electrical transformer out of the case, took off the motor, and added a hand crank kit. I love it! I have another 99, which is newer, since it has the reverse lever, and I put a handcrank kit on that as well. I have a Singer Spartan too, still with the electrics.
